Holocaust ghettos weren’t just holding areas — they were deliberately designed spaces of starvation, control, and ultimately, mass murder. Its origins can be traced back to the 1500s in. Ghetto, formerly a street, or quarter, of a city set apart as a legally enforced residence area for jews.

In other cases, ghettos were places of terrible poverty. In some cases, the ghetto was a jewish quarter with a relatively affluent population (for instance the jewish ghetto in venice). In 1541, the quarter was enlarged to cover the neighboring ghetto vecchio, and in 1633, the ghetto nuovissimo was also added.
Hearing the word ‘ghetto’, most people will think of a poor urban neighbourhood inhabited by a single minority group.
