I've been using duckduckgo lite as a primary search engine on my main profile. They make money by putting ads at the top of the search results, it's not a scam because there is a lot of money to made through advertising. I read an article on techcrunch (link below) that says soon to be launched brave search is the only real privacy focused search engine built from ground up.
