Apparently the automatic update didn't update the extension pack, and there was a conflict. A functional virtualbox installation can only be recovered by the complete uninstallation of 7.2.4 and then a clean installation of the previous version. By wsl* i presume you mean wsl2, which makes use of the windows hypervisor platform; I solved it by manually downloading and installing the virtualbox extension pack version 7.2.2. Downgrading without performing a full. And that results in virtualbox also having to use the windows hypervisor's api as it will be.
